Mazzi & Tac : They Met Once in Dubai and BOOM, An EP is now LIVE!!

It's surreal to witness this project come to life. I've know the fam "Mazzi" since I launched the blog, way back in '07. We have always remained in contact and throughout my journey, he has ALWAYS showed love and support. Just last year, he was passing by the UAE and we connected and I was telling him about SOLE DXB and he got really intrigued and knowing him, he really fell in love with the idea of being in Dubai and witnessing this Cultural Hip-Hop festival. So, 3 months later, Mazzi made it to SOLE DXB as part of the Def Jam crew that was coming with Dani Leigh.

Last year, I was blessed to have a "Radio Booth" at Sole DXB, I called it "THE BEAT" and it featured 8 Rappers, but when I found out Mazzi was gona make it, I had to add him to the mix and watching all these rappers spit on various beats was a blessing

I found myself introducing Mazzi to the community and one of those artists was Tac and to see that they now have a project together makes me super happy. I asked Mazzi how did this whole project see light, this is what he said :- 

"..Stepping into the SOLE DXB cypher, I immediately sensed the immense talent around me! 
Dubai has an array of artists with unique styles! One person who stood out was a this kid Tac! He was young, lyrically gifted, & hungry! 
Soon after, I got a chance to build with him & saw that our styles would definitely compliment each other... That led to us mutually & organically deciding to record an EP on my next trip to Dubai! 
We completed it in two days, & spawned “S.O.U.L. Broke Forever”! 
Hope you guys enjoy it! Looking forward to further collaborations out there! YALLA!"

I had to also ask Tac about that collabo and he had this to say: 
"no disrespect to anyone I ever worked with, but there's only a handful of rappers that give me a hard time on a record, and man... Mazzi?? He up there.." adding that when he met Mazzi in that Sole Dxb Cypher, the EP was born then.. 
a YEAR later its a reality and its LIVE!

What's admirable and amazing is that ALL proceeds/profits from sales go to the Kenya Community Centre For Learning 
which is a special needs school in Nairobi and this is how Mazzi has been releasing every single project/album and it's amazing to see this collaboration with a Dubai-Based Artist. 

I want to thank both artists for collaborating, it is somehow a bridge, Tac is an Egyptian-UAE based rapper and Mazzi is American-Iranian based in NY. Its just beautiful..

THE BEAT DXB PRESENTS: NARCY LIVE IN DUBAI !!

THE BEAT is a series of events curated by Saudi radio host and blogger Big Hass, all in the aim to support local and regional rising music artists by creating opportunities for them to perform live. What started as an underground event in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) in 2013 has now been marked by the DXB stamp, as Big Hass tries to nourish the independent music scene through private live events. 

In less than a year, two Dubai editions of THE BEAT have already been successfully accomplished, bringing a new flair to the local music scene. 

It is time to crank up the volume for a third edition and bring in a prominent talent from the indie international hip-hop scene, alongside some artists from Dubai, who will be opening for the main act. 

For The BEAT DXB vol iii lineup, Big Hass is inviting one of his heroes, Canadian-Iraqi artist Narcy to showcase exclusively his new album "Space Time" LIVE in Dubai. Multimedia and merging East and West are trademarks in Narcy’s way of presenting his art; in this performance, he will be giving his audience a visual and auditory glimpse on what “Space Time” means to him on personal, cultural and philosophical level. 

Joining him will be Lebanese Dj/Turntablist Dj Lethal Skillz, a music pioneer and the undisputed champion in the genre of Turntablism, fusing hip-hop and oriental Arabian streams. 

Opening acts will also include soulful voice and fashion enthusiast Layla Kardan, and Moh Flow, who is one of the first artists who supported The Beat from its humble beginnings in Saudi Arabia. 


The event will occur on Wednesday March 13, 2019

REEM EKAY RELEASES her Debut EP "PURPLE"

Dubai based singer/songwriter REEM EKAY just released her Debut EP entitled "PURPLE" and from the get-go, one could realize how passionate and sincere this artist is in her work. Been a fan ever since I met her which was 2 years ago and I even hosted her at THE BEAT DXB Vol 01 

She played SOLE DXB this year & did an incredible set with AY (who produced the EP on the 1's & 2's)

The EP consists of 4 songs with one feature from Jeed. I think its a solid EP & a great debut from one of my favourite artists in the city. Her songwriting process & vibe is something a lot of people would relate to. My personal favourite track is "Truth", its the lyrics & the attitude on this song that I love... Her being a  spoken-word poet is so interesting with her musical personality. I think the fusion is something that we need in the Arab world and I can't wait to see what she got for us in the future..

THE BEAT DXB Vol ii | Pix

9.11.2018 --- a date to be remembered in Dubai. I simply am out of words for the amount of support I received from the community. I started THE BEAT in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and I did NOT want it to end just because I relocated to Dubai for my son who was diagnosed with Autism couple of years ago. Below are few pictures from the night from Waleed Shah who blessed me with incredible photos:-

Performer 1 :
Saudi Singer/Songwriter Roya rocked the stage in her FIRST EVER out of Saudi performance. She was part of THE BEAT series back in Saudi and it was an honor to give her the platform. I was impressed with her maturity and presence on stage. Definitley looking forward to her original work.

In between sets, I have decided to keep the music going by having a live drummer and rappers take on the stage which proved to be a very entertaining segment. 

First Rapper, Dubai based Egyptian rapper TAC, A young beast for sure, loved his passion and predicting big things for this young soul.

Performer 2:
Syrian Singer/Songwriter Ghaliaa Chaker who is breaking stereotypes and is someone with a golden voice and heart. Loved how free she was on stage as she was producing her own beats LIVE, getting the crowd entertained & playing Keys/Guitar & Derbake all in the same set.

In a random moment, I saw P. Storm from The Recipe in the crowd and I called him up on stage to which he agreed, and had a really cool time.

Performer #3:
With a doubt, the most powerful performance in the evening, FAFA who is half Emirati/half Honduran rocked the stage and took the audience on a journey with her chilling and powerful voice. She even had the audience sitting down at one point... truly a highlight!

Sharjah based Lebanese MC KAFV took the stage next where he was able to showcase his lyrical ability. I loved the metaphors he was using. Nice flow!

Performer 4:
Saudi rapper Molham who juggles business and music came through with a great set as he entertained the audience with Arabic & English lyrics. His flow is incredible and he's someone that knows how to rock a crowd.

KC Hamada took the stage and I liked what I heard, I believe he has lots to offer and I can't wait to hear his new original material

Performer 5: 
Iraqi Dubai based singer/songwriter, Shébani who is someone that has been working very hard. I admire her songwriting process and her ability to connect with the audience through sweet yet powerful lyrics. I loved that she brought a band and especially the drums, it added a great "VIBE" to her sound.

Just before we close the night with our last performer, Moh Flow whom I've known for about 12/13 years came through & I had to put him on for the rap+drums segment, he rocked it as usual.

Performer 6
Our finale for the evening was Sudanese based rapper 249TooDope. I have big respect for the Sudanese community in the UAE, they are very supportive of each other and that showed! TooDope performed to a sell out crowd that were singing/rapping along with him. Truly an entertainer!

Shout Out to Dj Sizer who was on the 1's & 2's and put the crowd in the mood & Colin the Drummer was made my vision a reality and did a great job!

DUBAI BASED RAPPER "MENON" DROPS VIDEO FOR "CITY LOVE"

Earlier this year (April 23 '18) , Dubai based rapper Menon dropped his album "Epiphany Of A Misfit" produced by Dubai-Based Genius "RAYAN" and ever since he's been working hard to always release visuals to his songs and working on other projects. In my opinion he's considered one of the best rappers in Dubai at the moment. 

He just released a video for "City Love" one of the songs from the album. Video is directed by Philip J. Rachid (Soultrotter) and video produced by Phenomena Films. 

Check it out below. Big up everyone involved in the project. It's always great to see videos produced in a high quality and the song itself is dope. My Favorite song in the album is "1952" which I hope Menon does a video for soon.

Soaking in a tub filled with Laban (Yoghurt) and humoring a crawling snake, Dubai-based Somali rapper Freek comes back with an original trap music video that tackles things in its rawest form. It is simple. It is utterly "WADHA"

He's one of the very few "trap" artists I truly appreciate/enjoy listening to, only because I know he reps his reality whether that's positive or negative. 

I love the word-play he uses and visually its just DOPE!

Shébani X RAYAN Rock Sole DXB 2017 Music Main Stage !!

On Dec 9th, 2017, Dubai-based Iraqi singer/songwriter "Shébani" took the stage at Sole DXB and it was so dope to watch her perform old & new tracks on a big stage like that. Shout out to the guys at Sole DXB for their great work & dope vibes.

She was accompanied by her producer and motivator, the genius "RAYAN". Both were incredible on stage and I am so proud of them.

It's been amazing watching Shébani grow into her own artist and paving the way also for so many Arab female singers. Shébani was the ONLY Arab female to participate in the Sole DXB music line-up for this year. That is an amazing accomplishment and we need to push for more female representation in the years to come.

I've sat down with Shébani & RAYAN and asked them few questions about their Sole DXB set, check it out below:-

Big Hass: How was it preparing for a big show like Sole Dxb?

Shébani:  It was very similar to prepping for any other show to be honest, except you had to keep in mind that this stage is twice as big and the festival is twice as important. I try to treat it like any other show because I don't really tend to give different amounts of efforts no matter how big or small our performance will be. This helps me reduce a lot of the stress and the nerves I get before a show, it's constant practice leading up to bigger opportunities I guess.

RAYAN: It wasn’t too different to any other show we prepare for in all honesty. We were fortunate enough to have a string of shows leading up to sole, so we tried and tested out a number of different ideas for our live show throughout that period. So by the time we got to Sole DXB we had a concrete
idea of how the show was going to play out. A lot of focus was more on the visual aspect as well
crowd participation.

BH: Shébani, Tell us about that moment, right before you get up on stage. What was going through your mind?

Shébani: "Don't mess up, don't mess up, don't mess up!" haha! I was only clearing my mind, I wasn't thinking about anything else but THAT very moment itself, I said a little prayer, reminded myself why I'm doing this, and reassured myself that this is where I'm supposed to be. 

BH: RAYAN,The way you arranged this full set was great. Take us through the process of creating Sole DXB set? 

RAYAN: Sound wise, I was very adamant on creating a sonic atmosphere for the set. I wanted to translatea mood and scenery that you could hear with the interludes, effects, and breaks between songs. A lot of the songs were re-mixed for a live out-door setting so that some of the audio elements in the songs didn’t go missing with the size of the venue and the sound dispersing in an outdoor
environment. The set was essentially a 25 minute song-piece moving from motif to motif of how we wanted to tell Shebani’s story.

BH: I believe you dropped 2 or 3 new tracks at the Sole Dxb set? tell us about each record? When will they be online? 

RAYAN: One of the song will be out on 21^st December 2017, whilst all the rest will be 2018 releases which we’re super excited for!

BH: You performed @ the same stage where headliner Hip Hop legend Pusha T performed. What does that mean to you guys?

Shébani: The whole festival itself is something I can't really comprehend just yet, aside from sharing the stage with all these incredible artists, I personally focused more on the fact that I played in the same festival one of my favorite artists played at. It's an incredibly humbling and exciting experience, it really puts everything into perspective for you. I don't quite think about these details until a few days after when it really hits me, these moments push your career further into levels you never thought are even possible. I can't wait for what's to come next! 

Rayan: It was an absolute privilege to share the stage with an icon such as Pusha T. He’s someone that a lot of artists and fans here look up to so it means a little more when you get to perform alongside artists of that caliber. It was also equally exciting to share the stage with artists like H.E.R and local artists that we believe have so much to offer music in our region. We felt we deserved that opportunity after a lot of the hard work we had put into the music through the tail end of 2016 and all of 2017. To play a show of that size was a small recognition and acknowledgement of our previous efforts. 

Shébani: You were the ONLY female reppin' Arabia. How does that make you feel? 

Shébani: This is why we do this, to inspire others to come out of their rooms and show the world what they're made of. I started off in my room singing to walls and camera lenses, I didn't know that I was going to be doing what I'm currently doing in my life, but I had a lot of support from friends and family, and I owe it all to them! This is what it means to me to be the only Arab female artist on that stage, it means that I have a responsibility to represent all Arab women around the world, and make it valid and valuable for them to be whoever they want to be

RAYAN/Shébani: Tell us about your Sole DXB 2017 experience. Any last words.

RAYAN: Definitely one of my most enjoyable and memorable moments as producer and musician. The entire weekend was a testament of how much music culture we are developing in this part of the world. To be able to see local and international acts seamlessly share the stage is a moment I take so much pride from, as someone who is actively trying to improve, celebrate and endorse that artistic liberty. 

Shébani:  It was a mixture of all good, new and tough things! It was eye opening and a massive learning experience, but it was also fun, exciting and very new. I was very happy to be experiencing moments I had to learn from, meet new people, and share the nights with some of the most prestigious musicians and artists who flew across oceans! 


Any Last words?

Shébani: Really excited for 2018, there's a lot to talk about and look forward to. No stopping now! 

RAYAN: Sole DXB 2017, you guys were amazing. We can’t wait to come back. Stay tuned for 2018.

If you've been following me, then you definitley heard the name "Shébani" before. This amazing Dubai based singer/songwriter just a dropped a new single entitled "Scylla" produced by "Rayan" and its simply catchy, radio friendly, dope and hip.

What I personally love about the song is the fact that Shébani was able to get out of her comfort zone and she did that with ease and proved that an artist can always try new things and succeed in it. She's a natural man..Big credit goes to her producer "Rayan" who has been a huge catalyst for artists not only producing songs for them but also making them realize why they do music in the first place which is a very important thing to know as an artist.

I do believe that Shébani is a very important artist to support and push from this region. Not only is she humble and talented but she's also a voice for so many and I 100% believe that lots of people relate to her and her vibe which is somehow empowering as well. Lebanese Rapper N1yah Drops a Video for "Die Alone"

Lebanese-Dubai based rapper N1yah dropped a video for her track "Die Alone" & I for one wants to support her. We don't have many female MC's in the region and we really need to start pushing our sisters out there to get on the mic and start representing..

ABRI & FUNK RADIUS RELEASE VIDEO FOR "SUNNY DAZE" | Directed by FREEK TV

Emirati singer/songwriter "Abri" alongside his group Funk Radius just released a video for their track "Sunny Daze". I had the honor to interview Abri and also catch this track performed on my show.

I fell in love with it and the vibe. Abri is considered a legend in the UAE scene not to mention that hes mad talented. I am so happy to see him release videos/songs. 

This video is so cool, given that it's also directed by "Freek" who is one of the best at this in the city. When I asked Freek how was it working with Abri, he said " Humble man, been seeing him on TV since I was a teen.. and now I am collaborating with him to direct a video for him. It's an honor.." 

And this is what Abri had to say "I am excited about releasing Abri & Funk Radius 'Sunny Daze (Ankabūt)', our new single and video exclusively on Anghami. The song and video were done a while back so i was itching to get it out there so that people could hear it and watch the amazing video (shoot and edited by Freek T.V) at the same time, that way they get the whole experience. & When I asked him about the spider, Abri said " The Spider is symbolic. It represents the female and fate. The choices that we make construct our lives. SO if you do good things then good things happen but if you make bad choices, then..."

Q&A with Amal Murad | A Pioneer in the UAE Parkour Scene

On August 11th,2017, I was honored to host TEDx Fujairah. I was truly inspired by the speakers I met that day and also by the amazing team efforts from he organizers. There was some inspiring speakers and some incredible entertainment that took place. One of those speakers was "Amal Murad". My first impression of Amal was that shes very energetic, passionate. Amal is a pioneer as she is the first Emirati female parkour instructor. 

Below is a quick Q&A with Amal about how she started and what does parkour mean to her. Check it out & also at the end of the interview, check out the link of her TEDx Talk..


Q: How did you get into Parkour. Was it a specific video you saw, a friend? tell us. 
Amal Murad: Since childhood, I used to play video games like 'tomb raider' where the woman lead character would be doing all kinds of cool stunts. Being the daredevil myself as a child who had climbed over to the neighbors' houses and found a path to avoid getting caught by the dogs, I've always felt that I had that side of me. However, I didn't understand what "that side" really was until I could give it a name almost 20 years later. It was when Xdubai started sponsoring two parkour athletes. That is when I was introduced to the sport and had finally started appreciating what possibilities there were. 

Q. You've always said that parkour somehow "Liberated you" - Can you expand more on that? What were liberated from? 
AM: I've always considered sports as a way to release pent up negative energy. Not only is it scientifically proven that exercise gives out endorphins, but to me its more about the way you feel after a dedicated workout. Parkour especially allows you to express yourself through movement. It isn't about jumping over buildings but more about what you find yourself capable of doing when you set your mind on something.

Q. Parkour for you is a way of life. What is/are the main misconceptions if any about this sport? 
AM: I have heard that parkour isn't considered a "real" sport and that it doesn't do much for the body. People tend to underestimate just how much endurance, cardio, strength and explosiveness is required in parkour. We use legs for jumping and balancing, arms for climbing and hanging; truth be told, its a full body workout but the best part is that you don't feel it is. 

Q. You were part of an incredible campaign by "Nike". Tell us about that opportunity. How did it happen? & what is the message that they were trying to convey? 
AM: It was such an exciting opportunity because Nike approached us and wanted to know the struggles we faced as Muslim Arab women in sports. When we initially spoke to them, it was on a very superficial level where we discussed attire and that we had to wear more layers but the dialogue got much more personal. We then went to discuss the reason why we were afraid to even practicing a sport. Almost all of us said that we were afraid of what people would say about us. That is the mental wall we all have and continue to face on daily basis and only we are the ones who are capable of overcoming that wall. 

Q.  How important is the support you been getting from your family? 
AM: I can't stress enough on how important it is to get support from the people you love especially your family. It truly makes all the difference. I am never an advocate to go against your family to do something but more of trying to prove to them over time that you truly are passionate about something.

Q: At any point during your journey. Did you feel like giving up & if so, what did you do to overcome this? 
AM: Yes, when I broke both bones in my forearm. It truly broke my spirit because I felt like that was the end of the road for me. However, that is when your true strength is tested. I feel like it was a good time to reflect on what I have accomplished and whether or not I had the faith to continue. It's about remembering that everything happens for a reason and you have to trust the process. 

Q. What's your dream with Parkour? 
AM: My dream is to encourage more women to try new things in life and to not be afraid of diving into something they love.

Q. You were one of the speakers at TEDX Fujairah. Tell us about the experience of being on a Tedx Stage? & how did the crowd react to your talk?
AM:The experience was overwhelming in the best kind of way. I never expected the crowd to cheer as much as they did. It truly showed me that there are so many people out there going through the same things I am and that we're all in this together in trying to figure out what our purposes are.
