Them Kuwaiti boys are really rocking it early in 2020!! They have already released "SONS OF YUSUF & SHAFIQ HUSAYN" EP IN NOV'19 and released 2 tracks from their upcoming album "Shaykh The World" coming out in the next 7-10 days! 

On Jan 31st,2020, the duo dropped a track that features non-other than Jay Electronica ! and man oh man! Loved it! Jay's verse on it just fire! Sons Of Yusuf are once again proving that they are really building that bridge between East & West and connecting us more through Hip-Hop, I believe more people in the Middle-East needs to know about Jay!

I got Sons Of Yusuf on Buckle Up earlier today and they spoke about that collabo..."We connected with Jay Electronica back in 2007... now we have a record wit him.." Ya'koob told me...

Their Buckle Up Episode will be out by next week!

The song is titled "Diving For Pearls" and he went on and said ...

PALESTENIAN RAPPER "ILLIAM" RELEASES HIS FIRST ALBUM ENTITLED "BEFORE BED"

After many collaborations and singles since 2018, Palestinian rapper who is based in Qatar released his FIRST Official album on 10th Dec, 2019 on Soundcloud and then it was released on all streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, Anghami, etc...) 

I just finished listening to the full album for the first time, and from the get-go, one can feel the passion this kid has for rap. A lot of discussion on mental health and also incredible punchlines. He is not holding back and lyrically he's discussing many things but the one highlight for me is the fact that "space" is where illiam feels at home. Space has no gravity so you always floating right? In one of the lines he actually says "... I am scared that the planet might not be enough for my imagination" 

My favorite song is "Cinema", from the first second till the last, he kept me engaged... "Bkhaf" is also a song that is getting a lot of love.

Malikah's 'I am Fighting" | A Testament to Patriotism Reborn

With the people rising up in Lebanon and demanding a change in the government. Artists are also trying to be involved in what they do best. A series of unified protests against the current government have somehow restored the faith of many in their country. 

For Lebanese/Algerian rapper "Malikah" meaning "Queen" in Arabic, it has been an incredible journey. First time Malikah stepped on stage was in 2001 and she overcame that stage fright and she converted that fear to power and she has been doing it since 2001 !!

Malikah just released a track to show love and solidarity to her home country Lebanon, entitled "I am Fighting". The song was actually written 2-3 years ago when some "revolutions" took place in the Arab region but she never really found "her place" to talk about them but LEBANON is a different story since its her country, 
" I recorded new parts, added new lyrics" Malikah said to have it adapted to the current situation. Malikah goes on and tells Re-Volt
" I never even dreamt that something like that would happen to Lebanon, I lost faith, but this movement somehow brought back a lot of hope, and that's why I wanted to support this revolution with this song which means a lot to me..."

Mazzi & Tac : They Met Once in Dubai and BOOM, An EP is now LIVE!!

It's surreal to witness this project come to life. I've know the fam "Mazzi" since I launched the blog, way back in '07. We have always remained in contact and throughout my journey, he has ALWAYS showed love and support. Just last year, he was passing by the UAE and we connected and I was telling him about SOLE DXB and he got really intrigued and knowing him, he really fell in love with the idea of being in Dubai and witnessing this Cultural Hip-Hop festival. So, 3 months later, Mazzi made it to SOLE DXB as part of the Def Jam crew that was coming with Dani Leigh.

Last year, I was blessed to have a "Radio Booth" at Sole DXB, I called it "THE BEAT" and it featured 8 Rappers, but when I found out Mazzi was gona make it, I had to add him to the mix and watching all these rappers spit on various beats was a blessing

I found myself introducing Mazzi to the community and one of those artists was Tac and to see that they now have a project together makes me super happy. I asked Mazzi how did this whole project see light, this is what he said :- 

"..Stepping into the SOLE DXB cypher, I immediately sensed the immense talent around me! 
Dubai has an array of artists with unique styles! One person who stood out was a this kid Tac! He was young, lyrically gifted, & hungry! 
Soon after, I got a chance to build with him & saw that our styles would definitely compliment each other... That led to us mutually & organically deciding to record an EP on my next trip to Dubai! 
We completed it in two days, & spawned “S.O.U.L. Broke Forever”! 
Hope you guys enjoy it! Looking forward to further collaborations out there! YALLA!"

I had to also ask Tac about that collabo and he had this to say: 
"no disrespect to anyone I ever worked with, but there's only a handful of rappers that give me a hard time on a record, and man... Mazzi?? He up there.." adding that when he met Mazzi in that Sole Dxb Cypher, the EP was born then.. 
a YEAR later its a reality and its LIVE!

What's admirable and amazing is that ALL proceeds/profits from sales go to the Kenya Community Centre For Learning 
which is a special needs school in Nairobi and this is how Mazzi has been releasing every single project/album and it's amazing to see this collaboration with a Dubai-Based Artist. 

I want to thank both artists for collaborating, it is somehow a bridge, Tac is an Egyptian-UAE based rapper and Mazzi is American-Iranian based in NY. Its just beautiful..

Come Back from "Little Brother" with ‘May The Lord Watch" Album !

Little Brother are an American hip hop duo from Durham, North Carolina that consists of rappers Phonte and Big Pooh. 

DJ/Producer 9th Wonder was an original member of the group but departed in 2007. 

& Now, Phonte and Big Pooh have released their "May The Lord Watch" album, their first since 2010.

I been listening to the album since it dropped Aug 20th, 2019 !! and I keep saying every song is something. What a project. What a journey. Its beautiful to see what Phonte and Big Pooh would say about the album and the process. 

I just think its amazing they took that much time to put something out to the world that is 100% classic. I feel this should be somehow put in a "time capsule" so that future Hip-Hop generations would get a taste of how hip-hop should sound like.

You wouldn't believe that there was a 9 year break!!!

Dubai based Somali Artist Mustafa Ismail better known as "Freek" always knew what he wanted to do with the track "Wala Kilma", he told Re-Volt ".. I wanted to do remix for the track right after I finished recording - even before I release it- not sure why, but it was my instinct". He was always looking ahead. 

The Wala Kilma track gained lots of attraction when it dropped and eventually was posted on one of the biggest platforms for urban music in the UK "LinkUpTV". 

Last Year, Freek met and shot a video for British rapper "EYEZ"  and that's how the discussion began. "I had Eyez's verse since January." said Freek. 

Soon after that he bumped into British rapper Young Tribez in Dubai and they automatically formed a great bond and Freek asked if he also would like to jump on the track and it was a DIRECT GO-AHEAD. 

RE-VOLT managed to get a quote from Young Tribez on this beautiful experience " Easily the most fun feature I've done to date, from when we first chopped it up right until we finished the 3 Day video shoot. Not getting to hear each other's verses until the song was finished was nerve racking but exciting at the same time. Speaking to freek about the song from when I saw the original on YouTube, I could see he puts time and effort into his craft. I didn't understand what he was saying at the time but he was flowing sick and the beat was just fire!!! So him asking me to be on the remix was a pleasure. 
Living in the UAE for the last year I can see the music scene here vastly growing, and brother freek is making sure the scene is represented in a unique way I'm just glad to be a part of it!!!"

I personally am so proud of this young man, I believe FREEK has an authenticity about him that will elevate him to lead the music scene in the UAE. His passion is beyond admirable and I truly believe in his talent. Words can't express how much this moment to me and to us living in the UAE. I feel Freek's music will surpass borders and when he gets on those international big stages, we will all hear the words " Wala Kilma.." being chanted by the crowd.

DJ Sotusura Releases Beat Tape inspired by Arabic Samples

Sotusura is a Jordanian Dj/Producer/Radio Host and someone who has been supporting Arabic Hip-Hop for a while. I've always been a fan of his use of "Arabic Samples" and finally the day came where he dropped his OWN BEAT TAPE entitled "SALEH AL ALHAN" inspired all by Arabic Sampling...

RE-VOLT: Saleh Alalhan, your latest album that consists of Arab Sampling, How did the title come around? 

Sotusura: At first i thought its "Sane3 Al Alhan" . :) hahaha I actually thought of calling it Sane3 Al Al7an but that didn't sound right in many ways, I always found it interesting how Arabic names unlike in other languages have actual meanings to them, names such as Steve or Frank don't have meanings, Saleh has multiple meanings in Arabic, righteous but also good or valid... and Alhanan means melodies. 


RE-VOLT:.How long did it take you to put this together? and what was the process of gathering out the Samples?

Sotusura: I learned to DJ on vinyl in 2001, so my record collecting and sample gathering started then, when it comes to Arabic records, i started collecting them slowly since 2006-2007. The album itself from scratch took a bit less than a year of madness to finish, from the music to the artwork, mastering, getting it on all platforms online.

RE-VOLT: You've always been heavy on playing samples, is that what made you get into production? 

Sotusura: Yea of course, that and the fact that i've always been heavily into hiphop as well so i started producing on and off a long time ago on fruity loops but didn't like it much and always wanted to mess with it, never got the chance to get an MPC or to even be around one to learn on it which was a dream, but when NI dropped the Machine, it was exactly what i needed.

RE-VOLT: How is the feedback on the album so far? 

Sotusura: So far the feedback is great,I have a few people that approached me to rap to those beats so i also want to take this time to make it clear, other than for people who enjoy just listening to the music, there are rappers and singers out there who would like to write to those tracks, be my guest.

RE-VOLT: What were the challenges that faced you putting this album together? I know you had a crowd funding campaign, which I salute you for, its an album for the people by the people. 

Sotusura: Yes, the crowdfunding was going on during the month of December and I want to take this opportunity here to thank everyone that has funded this project, Im glad you guys made this happen and hope you enjoy the outcome as well. The main challenges is trying to meet deadlines, but its only by giving myself deadlines that i was able to make it happen, even if things got postponed a bit, thats things I learner from this release and will help me better in the future when I plan releases as far a challenges since the album dropped spreading the music outside of my direct circle is what I find the harder, making it and releasing it is one thing, pushing it once it is out is another game of its own... 

RE-VOLT: Very hard question i know, but what are your fav tracks on this?

Sotusura: Hahaha, yea thats not an easy one, i think i like different tracks at different times, the 1st 2tracks Sahi Al Nayem & Bel Fai,and the last 2 tracks Down and Wallz are more chilled and like them at the right times, I like Belbalad and Riding but think they will be even better if i got some mc's on them. Other than those i would say Darkning is one of my favorite, but if i just had to name one i think i would go with Gasdara. 

RE-VOLT:  Whats next for you? what are you planning for the rest of the year? 

Sotusura: Well before the year ends, I'm trying to finish and drop 2 more Ep's, instrumentals as well, on a vibe close to Saleh Alalhan... And hopefully doing more shows in and out the region...

Q&A with Syrian/American Artist Mona Haydar

Had a quick Q&A with Syrian/American Artist/Activist/rapper Mona Haydar who just released her EP entitled "Barbarican". In 2017, she release her song "Hijabi" which was named as one of the top protest songs according to Billboard. 

Big HasS: How did your bond with Hip-Hop surface in your life?

Mona Haydar: I was in Syria this one summer with my older sister and we were staying with our grandmother. It was back in the cd-player days and my sister had brought a few cds with her and one of them was Mos Def's Black on Both sides. I just remember being so shook by that album and feeling so connected to it and him through that music. In some ways, I even ended up doing my Masters graduate work as a result of that album too. 

BH: The conflict of being from both worlds: how do you balance the scale?

MH: I'm Barbarican. Not totally this and not totally that and yet I am whole and good because this is how God made me and where God put me. Just have to trust in the Divine plan and keep it moving. Barbarican is about balancing-- loving all the parts of myself and learning to heal the colonial wounds within me so that I can emerge fully realized in the path of my ancestors.

BH: Some argue that feminism is borderline unacceptable in Islam, what are your thoughts on that statement and how do you encourage women to break out from the shells and voice out their rights?

MH: Feminism is the sunnah. Muhammad, Alayhisalaam (PBUH), was a feminist. He abolished patriarchal practices and advocated for women's rights. Muslims love them some Jahiliyyah though. It's so sad. Women are the strongest creatures in the world. I admire and love women so much. We create humans inside of our bodies from nothing and then birth them into existence. God gave women the ability to physically witness creation. Women need to own their power as beings in society whether or not men are willing to recognize.

BH: Barbarican, starting from the title, we are already drawn into an explicit attack towards social norms. Do you think that its crucial nowadays to say things unapologetically and more bluntly - and skip diplomacy? 

MH: I believe in eloquence- beauty- elegance but I also believe in reality and truth telling. There is a balance that can be struck where you tell the truth in such a way that it doesn't break anything-- even when it is a difficult truth. I use humor in the EP- I use rhythm and rhyme- I use melodies and harmonies- I use fun hooks and catchy grooves to bring people in gently to some of the difficult truths I'm trying to share. 

BH: Who are women leaders who inspire you?

MH: I'm inspired by women and men alike. I'm inspired by amazing trees and bears and lions too. Do you often ask male rappers about which males they look up to? Just curious?

My answer is "Yes, I do." 

BH: In what way has motherhood strengthened your convictions and pursuit for a more just and human world? 

MH: Motherhood is cool and really hard. I love my kids and I want the best world possible for them and so I'm going to do everything in my power to try and make that better world a reality. 

BH:Tell us about the collaboration with Offendum ?

MH: I've known Omar a long time and really love his artistry. We've shared stages before and it's always good vibes. I hit him up and shared the hook I'd written to 'Miss Me.' He loved it and wanted to feature on the song. I was recording with my producers JB and Corron in LA and he came to the studio and laid down his verse. It was super fun. I hope we get to do a video. 

BH: Would you be interested to visit Dubai, UAE for a speaking/performance opportunity?

MH: Of course! I hope to be able to bring the music to a worldwide audience on a tour inshaAllah. In the process of figuring all that out right now.

Q&A with Dubai Based Egyptian Rapper Tac !

Big Hass: First off, how long you been in Dubai and how did you get into Hip-Hop?
Tac: I've been in Dubai for more or less the last 20 years. The story of how I got into Hip-Hop is a very long one, but to make it short and sweet, on December 12, 2012 I wrote and recorded my first song under the supervision of my mentors over Skype. And the biggest battery in my back was that 20 year rap veterans were telling me I could become the best rapper in the world after hearing that first song. And ever since then its been my goal. 

BH: Tell us about the name, TAC?
Tac:The name is hilarious to me till this day because of how it came about; I was 13 and extremely angsty. I called myself
The Anti Christ because I thought I was cool and tough. 
One day one of my friends called out to me saying "Hey Tac!", And I got super confused and asked him what the hell a 'Tac' was. He said, and I quote "N*gga, I ain't about to call you The Anti Christ every time I wanna talk to you." And ever since then, the name stuck. It no longer stands for The Anti Christ. It's just Tac now. Also a big pet peeve is when people spell is in all caps like TAC. It's actually just Tac. But I understand why people make the assumption that it stands for something so I don't mind. 

BH: As an Egyptian Rapper, did it ever cross your mind to rap in Arabic?
Tac: Never in my life will I ever rap in Arabic. I can barely even speak it, let alone come up with rhymes that don't sound like 3 year old nursery rhymes. 

BH: Tell us about your collaboration with MENON, The Recipe on the remix track of "Regula", how did that come about?
Tac: That collabo was amazing. And it came to me at just the right time. Bless Menon for that, really. I had just landed in Dubai after battling some issues in Egypt and not being able to leave the country. And my inspiration was completely gone. He called me literally the day I landed and told me about the track, and I was like "YES, PLEASE YES!" It really put me back onto my grind. Especially because a song with Menon was long overdue, and to make it even better The Recipe are on it, Frankly I lost my sh*t. I can say with confidence that that song has the best rappers in the middle east region on one FIRE track. 


BH: Who are some of the rappers that you listen to internationally/locally?
Tac : Oh man. HASS will know this because of his Madvillainy shirt but I am a HUGE fan of MF DOOM. I listen to Kendrick, Milo, Death Grips, Jay-Z etc.. I have a very awkward taste in music. 
As for local artists, The Recipe, Menon, KC Hamada, JustNishan, Coat of Arms, Shebani, Abri, Laura Lopez and honestly there are so much more that I appreciate, but those are the ones I listen to the most.

BH: When you dropping your next single?
Tac : My next single will be dropping sometime in mid-late November. I have a very special feature on there, that I am very excited for people to hear. 

BH: Tac, what scares you? "if anything"?
